How to temporarily prevent a Windows or driver update from reinstalling in Windows 10

In Windows 10, your device is always kept up to date with the latest features and fixes. Updates and drivers are installed automatically, with no need to select which updates are needed or not needed. In rare cases, a specific driver or update might temporarily cause issues with your device, and in this case you will need a way to prevent the problematic driver or update from reinstalling automatically the next time Windows Updates are installed.

Note taking applications and annotating pdf files

Xournal for Linux: http://xournal.sourceforge.net/

Jarnal – cross platform, runs on Java: http://sourceforge.net/projects/jarnal/

Journal – Windows proprietary

–you can read about them in wikipedia.

These are note-taking applications, which can also be used to edit or annotate pdf files. You can insert a cursor to type in text, or use a mouse or graphic pen to utilize handwriting. Of course, the pen is easier…mouse is a bit awkward. There are a few colors + eraser and some other things I haven’t figured out yet.

The main use I’ve made so far of the first two is to add notes to pdf files for my own use. I haven’t used journal.

Wish I’d known about them when I was wanting to fill out postal forms for bulk mailing for OMUG! Would have been so much easier than my workaround way.

Windows 10 or Ubuntu: Which will be the one OS to rule them all?

As the proprietary and open-source systems battle for mobile and PC users, what are the prospects for these two champions of converged computing?

As sales of tablets and phones continue to outstrip demand for PCs, the technology industry is preparing for a shift in how people use computers.

The expectation is that phones and tablets will begin to be used as desktop PCs, a change that will force a fundamental redesign of software.

Instead of operating systems and applications having a single interface, apps will alter their look and controls to reflect how they are being used. For example, a UI that favours large, easily-tappable buttons on a touchscreen tablet might switch to tightly-packed icons when the tablet is used with a monitor and a mouse.

The idea was dubbed convergence by Canonical, the company behind the Ubuntu operating system, when it launched the idea for a phone that would double as a PC in 2013.

SD Card Choices

https://www.sdcard.org/developers/overview/speed_class/

Greater Performance Choices

There are wide discrepancies in memory card transmission speeds depending on the SD memory card manufacturer and brand. Varying speeds make it difficult to determine which card will provide reliable recording of streaming content. Recording video require a constant minimum write speed to ensure a smooth playback. The SD Association defines Speed Class standards indicated by speed symbols to help consumers decide what card will provide the required minimum performance for reliability. There are two kinds of speed indications regarding SD bus generation:”

More at the like above.

I like to play with video, so I use this card for my stuff.

When I used an older 64 (the black one) my device said that it was slow……………and I would have better performance from an better card.

So far, I’ve been real happy with it.

Google’s Vint Cerf warns of ‘digital Dark Age’

What do YOU think ?

Vint Cerf, a “father of the internet”, says he is worried that all the images and documents we have been saving on computers will eventually be lost.

Currently a Google vice-president, he believes this could occur as hardware and software become obsolete.

He fears that future generations will have little or no record of the 21st Century as we enter what he describes as a “digital Dark Age”.

Mr Cerf made his comments at a large science conference in San Jose.

“Start Quote

Even if we accumulate vast archives of digital content, we may not actually know what it is”

Vint CerfWeb pioneer and Google VP

He arrived at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science stylishly dressed in a three-piece suit. This iconic figure, who helped define how data packets move around the net, is possibly the only Google employee who wears a tie.

I felt obliged to thank him for the internet, and he bowed graciously. “One is glad to be of service,” he said humbly.

His focus now is to resolve a new problem that threatens to eradicate our history.

Our life, our memories, our most cherished family photographs increasingly exist as bits of information – on our hard drives or in “the cloud”. But as technology moves on, they risk being lost in the wake of an accelerating digital revolution.
